Newcastle line up free transfer targets as striker bids emotional farewell

Tears, applause and one last walk around St James’ Park. Callum Wilson’s solo lap after Newcastle United’s 1-0 loss to Everton on the Premier League season’s final day wasn’t just emotional… it was symbolic.

The 33-year-old striker, who joined from Bournemouth in 2020, looks to have played his final game in black and white.

“Let’s wait and see,” manager Eddie Howe said when asked about Wilson’s future. “We’re going to sit down and talk with his representatives,” as per The Chronicle.

Wilson, who has scored 49 goals in 130 appearances for the Magpies, is out of contract this summer and the 2024/25 season has been marked by the injuries for the veteran striker.

Still, his previous impact remains undeniable. His goals helped Newcastle stay afloat under Steve Bruce and qualify for the UEFA Champions League under Howe in 2022/23.

With the news on Wilson edging towards an exit, Howe is on the hunt for a replacement, and he’s looking for a bargain this summer.

Only Alexander Isak and William Osula remain as senior striker options, and with Isak on the radar of major EPL rivals, free agents like Jonathan David and Dominic Calvert-Lewin could be explored.

Stade Rennais’ Arnaud Kalimuendo is being watched, as confirmed by Howe, with scouts dispatched to assess his progress in France.

“The power and pull of the Champions League is huge. There is excitement for the people here but it’s also a selling point for the club.

“We have to get the financials and every aspect right. When you haven’t been active in the market for so long there’s a danger you go over the line and make the squad weaker.

“There’s a desire to make the club stronger this summer.”
