Newcastle eye Bundesliga star as potential Alexander Isak replacement

Newcastle United may have to part ways with their top scorer last season, Alexander Isak, in the ongoing summer transfer window.

Several reports have suggested that Isak is interested in making a move away from Newcastle this summer and will not be a part of the Magpies’ pre-season tour.

Even though Newcastle had earlier asserted that they were not interested in selling him, Isak’s reported decision turned the situation around, with Liverpool keen on acquiring the Swedish star’s signature.

Now that there is a real possibility of Newcastle losing Isak, the Magpies have started their search for a replacement and have identified Benjamin Sesko as their top transfer prospect in the role, according to The Athletic.

Sesko plays as a forward for RB Leipzig since his arrival there from Red Bull Salzburg in 2023 and has turned heads with his efforts on the pitch for the Bundesliga side.

The 22-year-old was pursued by Arsenal for a while this summer before the Gunners decided to go with Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres and are closing in on sealing the deal for a reported sum of €63.5m (£54.8m; $74.2m) plus €10m.

Sesko signed a new contract with Leipzig last month that will keep him at the German club until the summer of 2029. His initial deal included a release clause of around €65m (£55.3m, $70.8m).

The aforementioned report also suggested that Sesko’s contract is also anticipated to involve a gentleman’s agreement between the Slovenian star and Leipzig that would allow him to part ways with the club for the right project.

Sesko netted a total of 21 goals and provided six assists in 45 appearances across all competitions for Leipzig last season.
