Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe may have dropped a major hint on Sean Longstaff’s inclusion just ahead of May 11 crucial Premier League clash against Chelsea, a move that could end Sean Longstaff’s five-month wait for a league start and a shuffle in midfield.
Longstaff, 27, has not featured in the starting XI since the 4-2 loss at Brentford in December. But ahead of the season-defining fixture at St James’ Park, Howe has opened the door for the academy graduate’s return.
“He should motivate himself — he’s here representing the club he loves,”
Howe told BBC Radio Newcastle. “Sean is training well. The control is very much in his hands. We’re delighted to have him.”
With Newcastle and Chelsea both locked on 63 points and only separated by goals scored in the race for a Champions League spot, every selection decision carries weight.
Injuries to regulars like Joelinton, who is reportedly out of the season. Howe has relied Joe Willock in midfield for last two games, but Eddie Howe could shuffle midfield, which can see Longstaff starting with Bruno Guimarães and Sandro Tonali.

“He has to be ready to take his chance when it comes. Any train of thought that I have to — I can’t do that for all 25 players.”
“But Sean is motivated. He has been brilliant behind the scenes, he is training well and he’s got undoubted qualities. He also has a contract for next year.”
“The control is very much in his hands as to what he wants to do for his long-term future. And we are certainly delighted to have him.”
“He’s got our utmost respect — he’s been a brilliant servant to the football club. He’s still a very valued member of the squad with a big part to play.”
Longstaff’s immediate form could play a role in what happens in this summer’s transfer window. According to a report by Goodison News, Everton are among the clubs eyeing a move for Longstaff.
With multiple midfielders set to depart and 13 players out of contract, the Toffees want reinforcements. David Moyes is expected to rebuild the squad, with Longstaff seen as a valuable potential addition.
