Newcastle confident ‘Champions League factor’ can secure former Premier League star this summer

Newcastle United are reportedly tracking Juventus midfielder Douglas Luiz, with the Magpies hoping UEFA Champions League qualification can help them outpace Premier League counterparts Manchester United, who are also monitoring the Brazilian.

According to Italian outlet Tuttosport, Eddie Howe has already opened initial talks to lure the former Aston Villa star back to England.

The 27-year-old, who joined Juventus from Villa last summer, has struggled for a consistent role in Turin under Massimiliano Allegri.

Newcastle scouts have flagged him up as a composed passer and midfield shield that could fit ideally alongside Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali.

With 14 goal contributions last season at Villa Park, Luiz remains battle tested at Premier League level, with age also on his side.

Juventus are also reportedly eyeing Tonali, and a potential swap deal remains a possibility, despite the Italy international indicating he is happy at St. James’ Park.

Man United are looking at the possibility of a move for Luiz, but the Red Devils are yet to make a concrete move. With Newcastle pushing for a top-five finish and Champions League nights back at St. James’, they believe the pull is strong enough to seal the deal.

Newcastle have keen eye on Yangel Herrera

Newcastle are rumoured to be targeting Girona midfielder Yangel Herrera. As per Fichajes, the Magpies could make a €25m [$27.8m] move for the Venezuela international.

Herrera has been solid in La Liga this season with four goals, three assists and a 6.83 average rating across in 27 appearances. His physicality and box-to-box presence makes him a viable option for Newcastle, who are keen to reinforce their midfield, ahead of a potentially busy transfer window.
