The future of the Colorado Avalanche’s Martin Necas has been a curious one as the newly acquired forward has reportedly been unhappy thus far during his short time with his new club.
The 26 year old forward enjoyed an explosive breakout season last year, scoring 27 goals and adding 56 assists for 83 points in 79 games split between the Carolina Hurricanes and Colorado Avalanche. Necas was the Avs main trade return piece in the blockbuster Mikko Rantanen trade. He recorded 1 goal and 4 assists in the Avs playoff run, in which they were ironically eliminated by the Rantanen lead Dallas Stars after he was traded again at the deadline after being unhappy in Carolina.
Well, it appears a similar situation may be unfolding with Martin Necas. The Czech native is going into the final year of his current contract that carries a cap hit of $6.5 million. Do the Avs decide to take the risk of holding onto Necas with the possibility he jumps ship for nothing in 2026 free agency?
If they decide not to, the thought arises with respect to which team Necas could be dealt too if a change in destination is in order once again. Nestor Quixtan of “Heavy Sports” has thrown out an intriguing trade pitch that would send Necas to the New York Rangers in exchange for futures assets.
In this deal, the Rangers add a point per game forward entering the prime of his career who could help the squad return to the playoffs next year after a disappointing 24-25 campaign. For the Avs, they receive top draft picks and a prospect who they could flip for more immediate reinforcements.
There are a few question marks to this deal. For one, the Rangers have a measly 778k in cap space at the moment. Some serious cap wizardry would have to be done in order to facilitate this trade. Not to mention the Rangers face the same problem as the Avs in that Necas could simply leave in free agency next summer if they are unable to get a deal done.
We’ll see what happens with the Martin Necas situation this season as he enters a pivotal point in his young developing career.
