New York Giants QB situation gets surprising label ahead of 2025 NFL season

The New York Giants’ quarterback room will be the biggest storyline of Big Blue’s 2025 season, for obvious reasons.

There’s juice and excitement surrounding the quarterback depth chart that simply hasn’t been there in recent years. Daniel Jones’s boring personality and ho-hum on-field performances certainly contributed to that, but the additions of Russell Wilson, Jameis Winston, and first-round pick Jaxson Dart have completely flipped the narrative around the Giants’ quarterbacks.

However, as exciting as the quarterback depth chart looks in June, it could also create a lingering headache for coach Brian Daboll once the season actually begins. It’s always the case when a first-rounder joins a quarterback derby that includes aging — and declining — veterans, and with Dart already winning over fans with the vibes he’s exuding on the practice field, the calls for him to take over as QB1 will grow louder with every Wilson misfire.

The New York Giants’ quarterbacks were recently ranked as the second-most important backup QB situation that could define the 2025 NFL season.

General manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll might have bought themselves a little extra time with a first-round QB. Although they must show marked improvement after significant downturns in performance during the past two seasons.

Meanwhile, veteran Wilson, 36, can be the table-setter in the short term.

“Players have described a different energy around the team this spring, with the leadership from accomplished quarterback Russell Wilson cited as a tone-changer,” Dan Duggan of The Athletic reported.

Beyond that point, the clock will be ticking for Dart’s eventual insertion into the lineup. As seen in the last two seasons, neither Wilson nor Winston remain capable of significantly elevating the play of others around them.

Ultimately, the Ole Miss product will be moved into the lineup so New York can determine its long-term direction.

There’s no doubt that Dart will be viewed as a lifeline by Daboll and Schoen in the event the Giants begin the season with an extended losing streak. If they have an insurmountable losing record by or shortly after midseason, Dart will undoubtedly take over in what will be viewed as an audition for what he and Daboll can do together as a head coach-quarterback tandem.

If the results are promising, Daboll will likely return as the Giants’ head coach in 2026. If, however, Daboll waits too long to promote Jaxson Dart into the starting lineup, or, when he is promoted, Dart struggles to make good on his first-round investment, big changes will be in store in the Big Apple one year from now.
