NBA writer gives grim outlook for Knicks’ chances of landing LeBron James

The New York Knicks have been linked to just about every star talent under the sun this offseason. From Kevin Durant to Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Knicks have also been linked to Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James.

James opted into his $52.6 million player option with the Lakers earlier this offseason, leaving many to speculate if he could potentially depart from the Lakers whether he forces a trade now, or signs elsewhere next offseason.

CBS Sports’ Sam Quinn talked about the possibility of James coming to the Knicks next summer, and the obstacles that could be in the way of such a move.

“As of right now, New York has around $46 million in second-apron space,” Quinn wrote. “However, that doesn’t account for the new deals we expect Mikal Bridges and Mitchell Robinson to sign between now and next summer. If both are long-term Knicks, New York will blow past the second apron and only have a minimum to offer. If James is open to the minimum, and that’s already a stretch, wouldn’t he be likelier to take it in Cleveland than New York? In this scenario, the Knicks would be fighting an uphill battle.”

In essence, bringing in James would mean one of Bridges or Robinson has to go. Departing with either player wouldn’t be an easy decision, as Robinson is the longest-tenured Knick, and Bridges was just acquired last offseason for a hefty package including five first-round picks.

Despite his advanced age, James is still a premier player in the NBA. This past season, James averaged 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds and 8.2 assists per game in 70 contests.
