NBA insider gives key update on 76ers’ restricted free agent

The Philadelphia 76ers are in an interesting situation as the offseason quiets down.

Over the past few weeks, the 76ers have been making minimal moves as they gear up for the 2025-26 season. While the health of Joel Embiid is still the franchise’s biggest question mark, it still needs to resolve its restricted free agent situation.

Last season, the final couple of months had little for the 76ers to be excited about, but a midseason trade for Quentin Grimes certainly helped. After the Dallas Mavericks sent him to Philadelphia, Grimes quickly showed his ability to be a reliable scoring option, averaging 21.9 points across his final 28 games.

While it is still a somewhat small sample size, Grimes put on an impressive scoring display that lasted for two months, giving him some added confidence in the free agent market. Of course, with almost no one having cap space and there being numerous questions about Grimes’ final weeks, he still doesn’t know where he’ll be playing next season.

In a recent report from Jake Fischer, that doesn’t appear to be resolving anytime soon. With the 76ers botching Guerschon Yabusele’s free agency, he noted that Philadelphia needs to make things work with Grimes.

Still, that might not come for another few weeks as the sides look to find an agreement both believe is acceptable. Grimes is far from the only restricted free agent in this situation, but with the 76ers looking to ascend back to championship contention next season, he might be the only restricted free agent that could truly swing the title race.
