Nationals legend will retire after 12 MLB seasons, 2 All-Star nods

They called him the Buffalo.

There were few players more beloved by Washington Nationals fans than Wilson Ramos.

This weekend, he’ll sign a contract with the Nationals to retire with his longest-tenured franchise, according to MASN’s Dan Kolko.

Ramos came up in the Twins organization but played only seven games for Minnesota before Washington traded for him.

He lasted seven seasons in D.C., putting up 10.6 Wins Above Replacement.

Ramos had 83 home runs with the Nationals and hit .268.

In 2016, he made his first All-Star Game and ended the season with a .307 batting average, 25 doubles, 22 homers and 80 RBI.

That was his last season with the Nats. He went on to play for the Rays, Phillies, Mets, Tigers and Guardians.

Ramos last officially played in the majors for Cleveland in 2021, but he hadn’t retired yet.

He has kept playing ball in the Atlantic League, Mexican League and Venezuelan Winter League in various forms all the way through this past winter for Margarita in Venezuela.

Now 37 years old, Ramos is hanging up the cleats for good.

He was a classic catcher, measuring 6-foot-1 and 241 pounds. As you’d expect, he wasn’t a fast runner, but he did everything else well on a baseball diamond.

The Nats will give him a well-deserved send-off this weekend.
