The Boston Red Sox have a bit of a conundrum at first base. Triston Casas is out for the season, and Rafael Devers is refusing to take reps at the position.
Boston is currently struggling, sitting a game under .500 and in third place in the American League East, but if they are in the mix at the trade deadline, they will need to add some pieces to be a true contender.
They’ll need some power in their lineup and somebody who can play first base, unless Devers comes around.
Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report proposed the idea of Boston trading for Nathaniel Lowe.
“They could use the opening on the infield as a way to get top prospect Marcelo Mayer into the lineup, but a trade for someone like Rhys Hoskins or Nathaniel Lowe also remains a real possibility,” Reuter notes.

Lowe is slumping a bit with the Washington Nationals, as he is hitting .230/.306/.400 with a .706 OPS. However, he has already hit seven home runs and driven in 30 runs on the season.
The 29-year-old was a key piece on the Texas Rangers 2023 World Series championship team. He is also a former Gold Glover and Silver Slugger, so he could significantly boost the Red Sox on both sides of the ball.
They’ll need to do something to fill the void at first base, as their current options are not sufficient.
It will be interesting to see what they decide to do. If Devers decides he’s willing to play first base, that will certainly change things. But if not, they’ll need to look at some other options.
