NASCAR points standings: Updated driver rankings from every 2025 Cup Series race

The Cup Series slate is as grinding as it is captivating, filled with racetracks that resemble scoundrels and carnage reminiscent of a monster truck rally.

The reward for all this mayhem? A chance to end the year cloaked in confetti and beer — one of sport’s greatest prizes.

The 26-race regular season calendar will give way to a 10-race postseason spectacle like few others in due time. Until then, reshuffling will unfold all across the Cup Series standings as heavyweights bow out and newcomers establish themselves in their respective cockpits.

NASCAR fans wouldn’t have it any other way.

With that, here’s a look at the 2025 Cup Series standings.

How does the NASCAR points system work?

NASCAR employs a unique, if not slightly convoluted, system to determine postseason qualification: the point system.

The metric goes as follows: drivers are awarded points for their showing in each stage of a race. For example, if a driver wins a stage, they are granted 10 points. If they finish second in a stage, they claim nine points and so on and so forth until you reach the 10th-place finisher in a stage, who nabs one point for their troubles.

Those points are tacked onto the points tally corresponding with the position a racer finishes come the end of the race. Because up to 40 drivers can participate in any one race, there are 40 points at play for every race. The winner takes all 40, the second-place finisher takes 35, the third-place finisher nabs 34 and as the list descends each driver nets one fewer point than their predecessor. Drivers who finish between 36th and 40th receive just one point for their efforts.

Those totals are recorded over the course of the 26-race regular season, with the majority of the 16 drivers that accrued the most points during the slate advancing to the playoffs.

Or, at least, that tends to be the case. There’s but one foolproof way to guarantee postseason qualification — by winning a regular-season race. Checkered flags are king in the NASCAR circuit. They can shake up the playoff standings in an instance — just look at Harrison Burton’s shocking victory at Daytona in 2024.
