Most 3s in an NBA game: Stephen Curry nears Klay Thompson’s record in 56-point outburst vs. Magic

Stephen Curry turned back the clock a bit on Thursday night.

The Warriors guard remains one of the league’s biggest stars, but he’s taken more of a backseat role throughout the 2024-25 campaign, averaging 32.0 minutes per game at age 36. But against the Magic, Curry was unleashed.

Curry notched a total of 12 3-pointers against Orlando in a 121-115 victory for Golden State; the Warriors, with Jimmy Butler now in the fold, have won seven of their last eight games as they make a push for the playoffs.

Here’s a look at Curry’s masterful performance against the Magic as he came close to tying Klay Thompson’s single-game 3-point record.

Stephen Curry stats vs. Magic

Curry totaled 56 points against the Magic on Thursday. He went 16-25 from the floor, 12-19 from 3-point range, and 12-12 from the free-throw line. The future Hall of Famer added four rebounds, three assists, and two steals, as well.

His dominant performance began in the first half. Curry sent the game to halftime with a buzzer-beater from beyond halfcourt, just the latest display of his wizardry on long-distance shots.

By the midway point of the third quarter, Curry was cooking. He already had 36 points and nine threes.

His newest teammate, Butler, helped get Curry a few nice looks throughout the matchup:

Curry’s 12th and final three helped seal the win for Golden State. With a two-point lead, he got a shot up from deep to beat the shot clock and drained it, which even got the crowd in Orlando going.

With Thursday’s win, the 32-27 Warriors temporarily claimed the Western Conference’s seventh seed.
After the game, Curry quickly found his mom, Sonya Curry, and gave her his jersey:

Stephen Curry career-high points in a game

Curry’s 56 points against the Magic weren’t a career high, but he did come close to setting one. The most points he’s dropped in a game is 62, which came in a January 2021 contest against the Trail Blazers.

Stephen Curry 50-point games

Curry has now scored 50-plus points in a regular season game on 14 occasions, plus one time in the playoffs. Here’s a look at his top scoring performances in the regular season throughout his career, per StatMuse:

Most 3s in an NBA game

Curry couldn’t quite tie Thompson’s single-game threes record on Thursday, which is set at 14. The former Warriors shooting guard lit up the Bulls for 52 points on 14 shots from deep on Oct. 29, 2018.

While Thompson’s 14 threes are the most in a single game, the trio of Damian Lillard, Zach LaVine, and Curry have all reached 13 in a contest.

Curry, the league’s all-time leader in 3-pointers made, owns plenty of other shooting records across NBA history, as well. On Thursday, he notched his 45th career game with at least nine 3-pointers. That’s the most in league history, and it’s not a particularly close race.
