The prospect of future hall of famer Sidney Crosby ever playing for a team that is not the Pittsburgh Penguins used to be an unthinkable train of thought.
Now, for the first time in the legends career, there is some real smoke to the possibility Crosby moves on from Pittsburgh as comments from his agent Pat Brisson imply via The Athletic. Brisson sparked fires with this statement during the interview regarding a potential Crosby trade: “Let’s put it this way, it’s always a possibility.”
The team that has received the most juice in terms of a future destination for Crosby is none other than the team Sid used to root for as a kid: The Montreal Canadiens.
Why would Crosby go to Montreal?
Besides nostalgic purposes growing up in Nova Scotia and watching the Habs as a child, Montreal would make sense to Crosby from a competitive standpoint. The Canadiens are a team on the rise, having returned to the playoffs last season with a promising young squad. Acquiring Crosby would catapult the Canadiens into probable Stanley Cup contention.
The hypothetical scenario of Crosby ending his career chasing a 4th cup ring for the most storied franchise in the game of hockey has to be a drooling one for the league. The Canadiens are also the last Canadian team to win the Stanley Cup, way back in 1993.
For Crosby, it is unlikely he wins another Cup in Pittsburgh at this stage. Does he take a chance on a new challenge elsewhere? Or does he keep his career legacy intact with the Penguins, just as his Pens predecessor Mario Lemieux did? Time will tell what happens.
