Mo Salah just set 3 records with his Footballer of the Year award

Mohamed Salah has made history once again — and this time, he didn’t just break a record; he dribbled right into legendary status.

The Liverpool forward was named the Football Writers’ Association (FWA) Footballer of the Year for the third time, matching Thierry Henry’s long-standing record.

Salah, now a hat-trick hero in more ways than one, had already won the award in 2018 and 2022. This year, he didn’t just win — he dominated, taking home a jaw-dropping 90% of the votes.

Let that sink in. In an era of tight contests, Salah won with what the FWA called “the biggest winning margin this century.” That’s not just a win — that’s a full-blown Salah-slide.

And it doesn’t stop there. By doing so, the Egyptian King helped Liverpool stretch their lead as the club with the most FWA wins.

The Reds now have 16 titles — almost double Tottenham and Manchester United (who both have nine). If Footballer of the Year was a trophy cabinet contest, Anfield’s doors might need extra hinges.

Every Liverpool player to win Footballer of the Year

Year Player Name
1973–74 Ian Callaghan
1975–76 Kevin Keegan
1976–77 Emlyn Hughes
1978–79, 1982–83 Kenny Dalglish (2)
1979–80 Terry McDermott
1983–84 Ian Rush
1987–88, 1989–90 John Barnes (2)
1988–89 Steve Nicol
2008–09 Steven Gerrard
2013–14 Luis Suárez
2017–18, 2021–22, 2024–25 Mohamed Salah (3)
2019–20 Jordan Henderson

Salah joins an elite list of Liverpool legends. From Ian Callaghan in 1974 to Jordan Henderson in 2020, and names like Keegan, Dalglish, Gerrard, and Suarez in between — it’s a lineup that could rival any five-a-side fantasy team.

But none of them have done what Salah has: three-time winner, runaway vote leader, and a stat sheet that looks like a cheat code — 33 goals and 23 assists this season.

FWA Chair John Cross said, “Rarely has there been a more popular winner than Mo. He continues to re-write the record books.” He also called it a privilege to watch him play — and honestly, who can argue?

With three games still left this season, Salah may not be done yet. The Premier League might be locked up, but the records? Still wide open.
