The New York Yankees are just over a month away from spring training, and there are still some question marks regarding the starting lineup.
One of the major question marks revolves around which position infielder Jazz Chisholm will play. Though he entered the league as a second baseman, Chisholm held down the hot corner during his half-season with the Yankees after being acquired at the trade deadline.
Exactly where Chisholm will play remains a mystery, but Jack Curry of YES Network said on “Yankees Hot Stove” that he believes the team wants the 26-year-old to go back to his natural position at second base.
If that’s true, then the Yankees need to find a replacement option at third base before spring training arrives.
They were thought to be in the running for Alex Bregman, but it seems the Yankees are being priced out of his $200 million contract demands.
There were also rumors and reports of a potential trade for Nolan Arenado, but those have been shot down by multiple reports.
If Chisholm moves to second base, that means the Yankees are likely relying on a DJ LeMahieu revival or the emergence of a player like Oswald Peraza stepping into a bigger role. The Yankees also have Oswaldo Cabrera available, but he’s best served as a utility player off the bench.
Any one of those options puts the Yankees at extreme risk of having a major hole in the lineup.
Chisholm is still under team control through the 2026 season and is projected to earn $6.7 million in arbitration, per Spotrac.
Whether Chisholm moving back to second base will be true remains to be seen, but the Yankees still have to address one of their infield spots before the 2025 season arrives.
