MLB insider reveals Red Sox’s plans with Trevor Story as struggles continue

The Boston Red Sox signed Trevor Story to a six-year, $140 million deal in 2022. So far, the returns have been less than ideal. As the team continues to struggle, the Red Sox may be considering a harsh move with Story.

Story has only played 217 games with the Red Sox since signing. He has a .228/.287/.377 slash line in that span and has not lived up to his contract. He was a two-time All-Star and two-time Silver Slugger with the Colorado Rockies. Story has remained the team’s primary shortstop despite his struggles.

The team recently called up their No. 2 prospect, Marcelo Mayer, in the wake of Alex Bregman’s injury. However, as Story continues to struggle, the question becomes whether Mayer, who came up as a shortstop, should replace Story this year or next. Story’s contract has a player option for next season, but also has a $5 million buyout. It would be a shock, designating Story for assignment is a real thought. However, The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal recently revealed the team does not plan to make that move.

“Here is a guy who is struggling offensively and defensively,” Rosenthal said on “Fair Territory”. “A guy who had played only 69 games the previous two years. The Red Sox are not going to give up on him and DFA him immediately.”

“I don’t expect the Red Sox to do anything along those lines,” Rosenthal added. “I do expect we’ll see Roman Anthony at some point. It’s going to be a difficult balancing act for them.”

The issue with Story is that the Red Sox have other players who probably deserve a spot in the lineup more than he, mainly Anthony. Anthony has been blocked from making his debut due to Ceddanne Rafaela, Wilyer Abreu and Jarren Duran. However, Rafaela can play shortstop and second base. If he were to replace Story, Anthony, baseball’s No. 1 prospect, could make his debut.
