The New York Yankees have been in trade talks to potentially acquire Cody Bellinger from the Chicago Cubs, but there have been some hurdles.
It was reported earlier in the week that the Yankees and Cubs were about $10 million apart in terms of how much each team would pay the remaining two years and $52 million remaining on Bellinger’s contract.
According to Jon Heyman of The New York Post on Sunday morning, that gap in the money remains and the deal is essentially contingent on “who blinks first.”
“Still a $ gap in Bellinger trade talk with Yankees and Cubs as of this minute. It’s a matter of “who blinks first,” if ever. Still could happen but Yanks also considering (Pete) Alonso, (Christian) Walker, [Carlos] Santana, [Josh] Naylor, [Nathaniel] Lowe, probably others,” Heyman posted on X.
The Yankees were reportedly among the finalists to acquire former Houston Astros star Kyle Tucker before he was traded to the Cubs.
Adding Bellinger to the Yankees would help them secure a solution to their first base problem, but the former MVP also provides some value as an outfielder.
It wouldn’t be a surprise if this stalemate lasts a little longer considering the other first base options available on the market, and the Yankees may hold some slight leverage after Chicago’s trade for Tucker.
