Last offseason, the New York Mets stole Juan Soto from the New York Yankees in free agency. This time around, the Yankees could get their revenge by stealing one of the Mets’ own.
First baseman Pete Alonso is a free agent this offseason. The face of the Mets franchise will hit the open market for the first time, and should command big dollars in free agency. Per Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Yankees, and Hal Steinbrenner, reportedly “like” Alonso.
Alonso has been one of the best power hitters in Major League Baseball since debuting in 2019, slugging 264 home runs in his seven-season career, and being named to five All-Star teams. This past season, Alonso hit .272 with 38 home runs, 126 RBIs, and a NL-leading 41 doubles.
The Yankees are expected to be in the mix for plenty of star players this winter, being linked to Alonso, Kyle Tucker, Cody Bellinger, and Bo Bichette so far.
Adding Alonso to a lineup that already boasts Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, and Jazz Chisholm, among others would bolster what was already the best offense in baseball in 2025. Surely, the Yankees would love to snag one of the Mets’ prime franchise players after they themselves plucked Juan Soto from the Yankees last winter.
