The Los Angeles Angels defeated the Houston Astros 4-1 on Saturday, but no one will remember the game for the scoreboard.
In the second inning, Trout went into the stands in an attempt to make an inning-ending catch on a Yainer Diaz foul ball. But a fan in the front row stuck his hand into Trout’s glove just as he was making the catch and jarred it loose.
Though Trout made his case to the umpires, the play was ruled not a catch. It was a similar play, but the opposite ruling of Mookie Betts’ viral interaction with a New York Yankees fan during Game 4 of the 2024 World Series.
Security relocated the fan and his son during the game, but afterward, Trout met with the pair and signed a ball and bat for them.
“I jumped in and the ball was in my glove, the guy just literally just took it out,” Trout said, per Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com. “But he was really apologetic. I learn new things every single day. Once I go into the stands, it’s free game. Being in right field, it’s a little different. In center, I don’t really get that play.”
Though Trout seemed peeved by the play in the heat of the moment, he told reporters he felt it was important to meet with them and make sure there were no hard feelings.

“They were really apologetic,” Trout said. “It didn’t really affect the game. I’ve got kids myself and that kid was probably nine years old. Just seeing them after the game, they were really nice people. They had to move and they probably spent hard-earned money on those tickets.”
Most importantly of all, Trout is off to a fantastic season at the plate, and hopefully, the move to right field will help him stay on the field for a full 162 games. Baseball is better as a whole when Trout is involved, and he’s currently tied for the league lead in home runs with six.
And, of course, Trout will have to prepare for a few more plays in the stands at his new position.
