Michael Kay gives his honest assessment of Yankees’ new reliever

As a last-minute trade with the San Francisco Giants ahead of the trade deadline, the New York Yankees acquired relief pitcher Camilo Doval. They were looking to bolster their bullpen for a potential postseason run and saw Camilo as a great option.

Unfortunately, his time with the Bronx Bombers has not gone to plan. He has largely struggled with his new club, holding a 4.97 ERA across 15 appearances. He has had a significant issue with his command, resulting in a high number of walks.

His struggles have been a talking point, and nobody has watched it closer than Yankees’ play-by-play announcer Michael Kay. He recently shared his honest thoughts on Doval and his struggles via NJ.com’s Adam Zagoria.

“Doval, to be frank, is not what the Yankees traded for,” said Kay. “This guy was an All-Star with the Giants, and his stuff, as Paul [O’Neill] said, is electric, but he has really struggled with passed balls and wild pitches and walks and pitch clock violations as well. They need to get him straightened out as they head into October.”

Yankees must get their bullpen under control

Camilo Doval has not been the only relief pitcher for the Yankees who has been struggling. Devin Williams has had a highly inconsistent year in his first season with the club as well.

Before this season, Williams’ highest ERA came during his rookie year, sitting at 3.95. However, that looks far better than his 5.60 ERA this season, and he has blown multiple save opportunities. The Yankees need to fix their bullpen problem and do it fast if they want a chance to overtake the Toronto Blue Jays for the division title.
