Mets urged to dump Pete Alonso and trade for $400 million superstar

The New York Mets signed Juan Soto this offseason and will now try to maximize their chance to win a World Series. They have a decision to make regarding Pete Alonso’s contract. Is he their best option at first base?

During a Bleacher Report livestream, Jake Brown urged the Mets to cut ties with Alonso and instead trade for Toronto Blue Jays superstar Vladimir Guerrero Jr. The Mets are going to have to dish out a big deal for either guy, so why not go with the better player?

“I want the best player that’s going to get you a ring. I think Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is light years better than Pete Alonso and four years younger. Now, it’s going to cost you $400 million dollars. It’s going to be 10 years, $400 (million) where the number starts next winter, and obviously, you’re not a lock to get him,” said Brown. “If you’re trusting in Steve Cohen who just gave out the biggest deal in sports history, why not trust him to go get Vladdy?”

As the first base market has started to settle, there are fewer teams that need and can afford Alonso. The Mets seem like the most likely landing spot, but the fact that there is no deal yet is concerning. He is a fan favorite and has been with the Mets his whole career. However, knowing that Guerrero could be in the cards, the Mets might rather pair him with Soto than Alonso.

Guerrero is younger and hits for more than just power. He had a .323 average last season along with 30 home runs. He will hit free agency next season and he noted that he and the Blue Jays are not close to an extension. The Blue Jays could deal him if they fear he will simply walk in free agency.

He said he would be open to negotiating until Spring Training. A trade could get him in the Mets building, and they have shown they are not scared to pay big money. A trade could mean they will just extend him before he hits the market.
