David Stearns is one of the top executives in Major League Baseball for a reason, and the New York Mets are very lucky to have him. Stearns, who is now able to attract star power due to Steve Cohen’s spending power, also knows how to make the correct small moves.
However, that could mean that he isn’t willing to move on from all of his top prospects at the deadline if the Mets are in a position to win a World Series.
He understands that the future of this organization will likely come down to how much money they’re willing to spend, but having trade assets is essential. Getting rid of players just to get rid of them to make a minor upgrade might not be the best idea.
However, that shouldn’t be the case with somebody like Chris Bassitt, who’s on the Mets in 2022. Bassitt, a member of the Toronto Blue Jays, could be traded, according to David Schoenfield of ESPN.
“In the Blue Jays’ case, things would really have to go sour for them to surrender at the trade deadline, but they do have two interesting would-be free agents in Bassitt (off to a tremendous start with a 0.77 ERA through four outings) and Bichette (hitting for average but not any power),” Schoenfield wrote.

During the 2025 campaign, there haven’t been many starters in Major League Baseball as good as the right-hander.
He’s posted a 1.88 ERA, and his strikeout numbers are better than ever, striking out 34 hitters in 28.2 innings. For a Mets team that’s been banged up and could use another arm, even if it’s to eat innings, Bassitt would be perfect.
He’s also thrown in at least 157.0 innings since the 2021 season, showing he’s reliable.
