Mets’ trade of Pete Crow-Armstrong to Cubs is aging horrifically

The New York Mets were seeking a playoff push late in the 2021 season, and they made a move at the trade deadline that looks like it’ll go down as one of the worst trades in MLB history.

The player they sent away, Pete Crow-Armstrong, is quickly rising into one of the game’s superstars for the Cubs.

What did the Mets get in return? Javier Baez and Trevor Williams. And they didn’t even make the playoffs!

Baez played 47 games with the Mets, and to be fair, they were great. He batted .299 with nine doubles and nine homers. But that wasn’t enough to get to the postseason, and Baez left in free agency for the Tigers.

Williams made 10 appearances for the Mets and had a 3.06 ERA. He stuck around into 2022 and had a 3.21 ERA in 30 outings.

But then you’ve got Crow-Armstrong, who slugged two more homers Friday night (including a grand slam). He has 14 home runs, nine doubles, three triples, 40 RBI and eight steals just in the Cubs’ last 34 games.

PCA is the best defensive centerfielder in baseball, too.

The Mets, as many fans will know, have had a blackhole in centerfield this year. They can’t solve that problem.

They traded Crow-Armstrong only a year after he had been selected 19th overall in the MLB Draft. They clearly felt he had potential, then risked missing out on it by moving him so quickly.

And right now, the Mets are certainly missing out on everything PCA has to offer, all for a couple of rentals that didn’t even get New York to the playoffs.
