Mets trade idea would reunite team with All-Star after Griffin Canning injury

The New York Mets will be without Griffin Canning for the rest of the year after he ruptured his Achilles on Thursday night against the Atlanta Braves.

Canning is the latest in a line of Mets’ injuries in the starting rotation. He joins Kodai Senga, Sean Manaea and Tylor Megill on the injured list. The Mets have the best ERA in baseball from their starters. However, with so many injuries that could change.

Manaea, Senga and Megill should all return. However, the Mets need a replacement for Canning who had been great this year. FanSided’s Christopher Kline suggests the Mets could reunite with Seth Lugo in a trade.

It has been an impressive late-career reinvention for the Kansas City Royals righty, who uncorks a deep arsenal of pitches, including a nice cutter that avoids the meat of the bat and sets up his defense for success,” write Kline. “Lugo won’t pound the strike zone for punchouts, but he has five straight seasons with a sub-4.00 ERA, including a starting career-best of 2.93 this season. He doesn’t cough up a lot of walks and he gets the job done, even if it’s somewhat old-school to pitch to contact like Lugo does.”

Lugo spent seven seasons with the Mets and had a 3.48 ERA. He was an All-Star last year and will be a free agent after the season.

The Royals are 38-43 and 3 1/2 games out of a wild card spot entering play on Friday. They could turn into sellers at the deadline, and Lugo could be a prime trade chip.
