The New York Mets’ starting rotation could use some reinforcements near the trade deadline. Perhaps a reunion with a former All-Star is in the cards.
Luis Severino played for the Mets last season, after eight seasons with the New York Yankees. Severino has struggled overall this year, pitching to a 5.30 ERA. However, he has a 3.04 ERA in eight road starts, and his ERA in Sacramento is 7.04. USA Today’s Bob Nightengale revealed that the Athletics “can’t wait” to trade Luis Severino. Severino signed a three-year, $67 million deal with the A’s last offseason.
If Severino is on the trade block, the Mets could be a great landing spot. The team is dealing with injuries to Kodai Senga, Sean Manaea, Griffin Canning and Tylor Megill. FanSided’s Tim Boyle suggested the Mets trade for him.
“Severino was good at times, not so much in other stretches, for the Mets in 2025,” wrote Boyle. “He gave them decent results in three postseason starts. All in all, 11 regular season victories with a 3.91 ERA and 182 innings was the best the team could have hoped for.
“Parlaying the success into his current three-year deal, the key to understanding Severino is how different he has been on the road versus at home this year.”

He would be an expensive addition, given his contract. However, he could be great for the Mets this season as they try to navigate all of their injuries. While Manaea, Megill and Senga should all return, Canning is done for the year and needs to be replaced.
