Mets receive praise from All-Star slugger amidst unknown future

Since debuting in 2019, nobody has smacked more baseballs into the grandstands other than New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso, who slammed 53 in just his rookie year.

And this past season, in just his seventh year in the majors, Alonso set the New York Mets’ all-time home run record with a homer off of Atlanta’s Spencer Strider, breaking Darryl Strawberry’s record.

And now, as the first baseman enters free agency over the offseason, the possibilities are literally endless, and his recent comments may have worried a few Mets fans.

Alonso Was Noncommittal When Asked About Future Plans

During a chat with Joel Sherman and Jon Heyman on their podcast earlier in the week, Alonso was asked about his future in Queens and if he planned on remaining with the team.

His answer was neither a yes nor a no.

“I mean, for me, I’ve grown up in this organization. And it has been really special,” Alonso told the pair of writers. “Obviously, the fans have shown nothing but support. But the people that I work with every single day, I go to battle with. And I’ve been blessed with unbelievable coaches, clubhouse staff, teammates. So, for me, those people are really, really important to me. And it has been really special.”

Alonso expressed his desire to look into the future but is willing to accept whatever the results of the offseason are.

“It would be great to stay. But, again, whatever happens, happens. I can’t get a crystal ball. I wish I could, but we’ll see,” said the slugging first baseman.

The Mets are far behind their rival Philadelphia Phillies in the NL East standings, a staggering 11 games behind, but Alonso himself has been a delight to watch per usual, with a .267 average, 33 home runs, and 113 RBI, tied with Seattle’s Cal Raleigh for second behind Philadelphia’s Kyle Schwarber, who leads with 123.
