The New York Mets won the offseason when they signed Juan Soto to a historic deal. However, they could ink another All-Star before the offseason is over.
While listing the best available first baseman and predicting where they would land, FanSided’s Quinn Everts predicted the Mets would reunite with Pete Alonso.
Alonso seemed all but gone when the Mets gave Soto a 15-year, $765 million deal. However, many teams in need of a first baseman have started to fill the role with other options. The Houston Astros signed Christian Walker and the New York Yankees opted to sign Paul Goldschmidt to a one-year deal. The Cleveland Guardians traded Josh Naylor to the Arizona Diamondbacks and signed Carlos Santana.
“It’s not the most exciting possibility for general MLB fans, but it’s the option that makes the most sense. As most teams with a need at first base have filled that need in recent weeks, Alonso’s market has dwindled to… well, the Mets basically,” wrote Everts. “Seattle is another potential landing spot for Alonso, but it’s hard to fathom the Mariners spending what will be necessary for Alonso — even if that number has shrunk as other teams fill the position.”
Alonso could end up signing a deal close to $200 million. Steve Cohen seemingly has no limits, but signing Alonso and Soto in the same offseason seems crazy even for him.
Alonso is a four-time All-Star. He hit 34 home runs and played in all 162 regular season games last year. He is a fan favorite and has spent his entire career with the Mets.
