The New York Mets have been steady in their efforts to bring Pete Alonso back to Queens. However, There has been no deal yet and that could change as spring training is right around the corner.
Alonso and Alex Bregman are the two biggest dominoes yet to fall in free agency. However, while making predictions for the remaining free agents, Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller predicted that Alonso would re-sign with the Mets instead of joining the Toronto Blue Jays. Spotrac projects Alonso to sign a six-year, $174 million deal.
“The $29 million AAV could still be in play, but 3/$75 million is sounding far more likely than 6/$174 million,” wrote Miller. “The ‘where’ remains the bigger unknown, though.”
The Blue Jays have been pursuing Alonso, but they have been in the conversation for nearly all big free agents. They have only been able to sign Anthony Santander.
“Toronto has entered the chat in a big way over the past week, though recent history tells us that when the Blue Jays start getting mentioned as one of the finalists for one of the most coveted free agents, it just means we’re getting close to that player finally signing with someone else,” wrote Miller.
Alonso was a key contributor to the Mets’ run to the National League Championship Series last season. Bringing him back and adding Juan Soto could make the Mets contenders to topple the Los Angeles Dodgers next season.
