Entering the 2025 season, the biggest question mark for the New York Mets is their starting rotation. They brought back Sean Manaea and signed Griffin Canning, Frankie Montas and Clay Holmes to boost their rotation.
However, they don’t have a true ace, and Montas is already injured. He suffered a lat injury and will be sidelined for multiple weeks after signing a two-year, $34 million deal to join the Mets.
This would seemingly put the Mets back in the market for another starting pitcher. But Will Sammon of The Athletic reports that despite Montas’ injury, New York isn’t planning on adding to its rotation.
“After losing Frankie Montas for possibly the first quarter of the season because of a high-grade lat strain, league sources said the New York Mets intend to rely on their depth instead of acquiring another starter,” Sammon reported.
The Mets still have Kodai Senga, Manaea, Holmes, Canning, David Peterson, Tylor Megill and Paul Blackburn. But while there’s plenty of depth, it certainly hurts to lose Montas for an extended period of time.
He won’t throw for 4-6 weeks, and this has put the Mets in a difficult spot.
It would be smart for them to look into adding more pitching. They could try to trade for Marcus Stroman, who is seemingly unhappy with the New York Yankees, or potentially look into bringing lefty Jose Quintana back.
However, neither appear likely, and this might be a major mistake for the Mets, even though their rotation outperformed expectations last year while Senga was on the shelf.
This could put the Mets at a disadvantage in the National League East. They still have to deal with the Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies. Just one pitching injury could be enough to put them in a tough spot.
We’ll see how the Mets respond to losing Montas.
