Mets make aggressive trade deadline decision after injury updates

The New York Mets are off to a hot start, and do not seem like they will be content with the team they have. They could be aggressive at the trade deadline to maximize their chances at a World Series.

According to USA Today’s MLB insider Bob Nightengale, the Mets have already decided what they will be looking for near the trade deadline.

“If you’ve got a spare left-handed reliever, stay by your phone, the New York Mets will be calling you,” Nightengale wrote.

A.J. Minter and Danny Young are both on the injured list. The Mets have Génesis Cabrera, but they will want to land upgrades in the bullpen near the deadline. Minter’s injury could cost him the rest of the season. Young was moved to the 60-day injured list after initially going on the 15-day injured list. With Young and Minter on the shelf, the bullpen is suddenly thin.

The Mets are 22-11 and look to be legitimate contenders. Steve Cohen is not the type to sit around if there is a chance to add star players. When October starts, the Los Angeles Dodgers are still likely the team to beat, so the Mets cannot afford to have any holes on their team unless they want a repeat of last postseason.

Relivers are always a hot commodity near the MLB trade deadline. However, the Mets may not want to wait until the summer deadline. They could get ahead of the curve and swing a trade now for a reliable southpaw.
