The New York Mets followed up a surprising playoff run with a great start in 2025, but the injuries are racking up.
After starting pitchers Sean Manaea and Frankie Montas went down before the season even started, the Mets have also lost relievers AJ Minter and Danny Young, both for the rest of the season. And in the latest injury news, designated hitter Jesse Winker joined Jose Siri on the injured list, further limiting the Mets’ options in the outfield.
That latest injury seems to be pushing the team to explore external additions, with USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reporting that the Mets are exploring a trade to land Chicago White Sox slugger Luis Robert Jr.
“The Chicago White Sox finally are starting to get some inquiries on center fielder Luis Robert with the New York Mets recently among the teams checking in and showing interest,” Nightengale wrote. “The White Sox are eyeing 23-year-old Mets starting prospect Blade Tidwell as part of a package in return.”
Robert has been seen as a trade chip amid the White Sox’s dramatic rebuilding process. He showed significant progress in an All-Star 2023 campaign, but hasn’t been able to produce at that same level since. So far in 2025, he’s slashing .186/.293/.326, though he has picked things up at the plate recently and leads the American League with 15 steals.
Robert signed a six-year, $50 million contract in 2020 and is owed $15 million this season, with $20 million club options for 2026 and 2027, so the Mets would have some flexibility on him if he does join the team in a trade. Robert has played center field throughout his career.

Meanwhile, Tidwell is ranked as the 15th best prospect in the Mets system. He has a 4.45 ERA and 42 strikeouts across seven Triple-A starts so far this year.
If the Mets are able to leverage some more controllable talent to add Robert, they would add a high-upside outfielder to the mix and a potential difference maker to their potent batting order.
