Mets linked to $50 million outfield star in trade idea

The New York Mets need a centerfielder.

They’re currently rolling out Jose Siri and Tyrone Taylor as an underwhelming combination in the big part of the ballpark.

Neither has hit a home run so far, and they’ve combined to hit barely better than .100.

The Mets are in need of a big name out there in center, and there’s one that’s likely going to be available in the trade market, writes Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller.

The suggestion for New York: Trade for White Sox star Luis Robert Jr.

The 27-year old outfielder can be under club control through 2027 with two club options each worth $20 million per year after he plays out his $15 million portion of the early-career $50 million extension he signed in Chicago.

Robert is a true five-tool star. He leads the American League in the early going with six steals.

Robert is two years removed from a 38 homer, 20 steal season in 2023 when he also batted .264.

Things were much worse for the White Sox last season, and Robert was a part of it, regressing to a .224 hitter.

At only .178 in the early going, Robert isn’t a sure thing to rebound in a major way in batting average.

But given his defensive abilities, his speed and his potent bat, the Mets could certainly use him. He’d be a massive upgrade on who they’ve currently got patrolling centerfield.

The White Sox could continue to hold Robert and hope he’s there for a return to contention in a year or two, but this is probably the best time to cash out on him with an acquiring team able to keep him for another three seasons still, counting this one.
