Mets ‘have not been willing’ to meet one specific Pete Alonso contract demand

The New York Mets have made many additions this offseason, highlighted by Juan Soto. They are trying to bring Pete Alonso back as well, but there is a holdup in negotiations.

Alonso is undoubtedly looking for a lucrative, long-term deal. MLB Insider Robert Murray revealed that the holdup in Alonso’s eventual return to the Mets is the length of the deal and not the money.

“While Alonso is looking for a long-term contract, the Mets have not been willing to offer the superstar slugger that. The best solution for both sides would be a short-term, high average annual value contract that would allow Alonso to opt out after the first season,” wrote Murray.

Just last offseason Cody Bellinger signed a deal with player options after year-one. He is coincidentally represented by Scott Boras as well. Alonso is rightful to want a long-term deal. He was phenomenal for the Mets in the postseason and has been a huge part of the team’s success since his debut.

Only Aaron Judge has hit more home runs than Alonso since 2019. If the Mets do not lock him up soon, another team could swoop in and give him what he’s looking for. A short-term deal with opt-outs could get Alonso back in Queens, but could put them in the same situation again next offseason.

“But with the gap in negotiations, it’s allowing other teams the opportunity to pry Alonso away from the Mets,” wrote Murray. “Among the teams that make sense include the Seattle Mariners, Giants, and Cubs.”
