Mets get more bad news as infielder’s 2025 season comes to sudden end

The New York Mets seemingly cannot catch a break when it comes to injuries in spring training this year.

They were very busy this offseason, making several signings in free agency. However, their depth is already being tested early on.

The team already has lost both Frankie Montas and Sean Manaea for Opening Day. Nick Madrigal was also ruled out for Opening Day after suffering a shoulder injury.

But that isn’t the end of their issues. New York got more bad news on Madrigal Friday morning, provided by Anthony DiComo of MLB.com.

“Nick Madrigal is likely to undergo surgery on his fractured left shoulder. He’s probably done for the entire season,” DiComo reported.

Madrigal struggled last season, slashing .221/.280/.256 with no home runs, 10 RBI and a miserable .535 OPS. He was brought in to serve as a utility infielder for New York.

However, he is likely now done for the season, making the signing ultimately fruitless. Now, New York has a need for a utility infielder.

Jose Iglesias, who was a key presence in the clubhouse last season when they went on their surprise run to the National League Championship Series, remains unsigned. Perhaps New York could look into a reunion with the veteran shortstop.

The Mets could also rely on some of their internal options such as Brett Baty and Luisangel Acuna.

Either way, this is a big blow for the Mets, and they’ll need to pivot somehow in order to have enough depth for the season. We’ll see what comes next for the Mets.
