Mets face tough decision as star pitcher nears return from injury

The New York Mets are currently 33-21 and in second place in the National League East, one-and-a-half games behind the Philadelphia Phillies.

New York has had a great season thus far; the offense that features former All-Stars Juan Soto, Pete Alonso and Francisco Lindor is hitting well and beating good teams.

However, the Mets’ success is a product of the pitching staff. Kodai Senga is having a Cy Young caliber season, David Peterson is picking up where he left off last season, Griffin Canning is performing well and Clay Holmes has rebuilt himself as a reliable starter.

Tylor Megill had a great start to the season but has faltered a bit recently despite a good start versus the Boston Red Sox.

The bullpen has been good as well, ranking third in MLB for bullpen ERA. This unit has helped New York be recognized as one of, if not the, best pitching team in the majors.

And they are going to get better.

According to Mets reporter Anthony DiComo, left-handed pitcher Sean Manaea is reportedly on his way back from an oblique injury that has sidelined him all season.

Manaea will throw a live bullpen on Thursday, and barring any major setbacks, could join the team by next month.

The problem is that Manaea would be the seventh starting pitcher on the roster. Frankie Montas is also on his way back from injury and is currently on a rehab assignment. With seven starters, at least one will have to go to the bullpen.

The Mets wanted to have a six-man rotation in spring training to give Senga and Holmes extra rest between starts, and this creates an interesting situation once both Montas and Manaea return.
