The New York Mets were one of the highest spenders in Major League Baseball at the start of 2025, but they have officially missed the playoffs and will have to look towards the offseason to fix any holes, plus make necessary changes to the roster.
Star first baseman Pete Alonso has already announced that he will opt out of his current contract, and it will be up to David Stearns and company to re-sign him.
Edwin Diaz also has an opt-out clause in his contract, which, after the stellar season he had, it would make sense for him to exercise it and garner a more lucrative deal, but at least he sounds willing to stay with New York.
Edwin Diaz sends message to Mets’ front office following 2025 season.
Edwin Diaz did speak with reporters following the Mets’ last game in 2025 and shared his thoughts on his contract, and said he has not begun thinking about it just quite yet:
“Not yet,” Diaz told reporters. “I was waiting for the season [to be] over to go home, talk to my family. I always like to make the decision with my family. I want my family to feel comfortable, feel part of my decision. Now, I’m going home, I will start thinking about that, and we’ll see what happens in the future.”
In 66.1 innings this season, Diaz had a 1.63 ERA, 28 saves, and 98 strikeouts. His K/9 for the season was 13.3. Nobody in their right mind would think Diaz was part of the problem, and this should be a no-brainer for the Mets organization, even if Diaz decides to opt out.
The Mets’ front office will be under a huge magnifying glass during the next couple of months.
