Mets drop details on Griffin Canning injury after he exited start against Braves

The New York Mets rotation has been one of the best in baseball. However, one of their starters just suffered an injury that knocked him out of his last start.

Griffin Canning exited the game after recording two outs in the third inning. However, on the pitch that he recorded the second out, he landed awkwardly coming off the mound. He was helped off the field, and the Mets announced he sustained an ankle injury that will require further imaging.

“RHP Griffin Canning was removed from today’s game with a left ankle injury,” the team announced on X. “He will undergo imaging.”

Canning was a key part of the Mets’ rotation. The Mets signed Canning to a one-year, $4.25 million deal in the offseason. He had a 3.91 ERA coming into the game tonight. He was having a career year and was a big reason why the Mets have the best starter ERA in baseball.

If the Mets lose Canning for a significant amount of time, the Mets may face some trouble maintaining their great ERA as a starting rotation. Tylor Megill, Kodai Senga and Sean Manaea are on the injured list already, and Manaea just suffered a setback in his rehab.

The Mets are trailing the Phillies in the National League East, entering play on Thursday. They seem destined to be in a tight race for the division lead all season. With another injury in the rotation, they may find it more difficult to keep pace with the Phillies.
