The New York Mets are stumbling and bumbling their way through the summer.
A big part of the problem has been their starting rotation. Almost every night, the Mets have had to turn to their bullpen early and often.
One statistic, one that’s hard to believe, sums this up in an emphatic way.
It comes courtesy of SNY:
“The Mets have had a starting pitcher go 6 or more innings 8 times in their last 50 games.
“David Peterson is all 8 of those starts.”

For those who don’t feel like doing the math, that means in 42 games out of the last 50, a Mets starter has failed to go six innings.
Every single pitcher to start a game not named Peterson falls into that category.
Peterson went six innings Wednesday night in a loss to Cleveland. He had two starts in a row at the end of June in which he failed to make it five innings, but he actually has gone at least six innings in 14 of his last 16 starts, counting those two June misses.
In that span, Peterson has a 2.95 ERA. He’s been a stabilizing presence for the Mets.

Peterson has had a bit of a wonky career. He was a well-regarded prospect but has bounced a bit all over, from the minors to the majors and back, from the rotation to the bullpen and back.
Now, the Mets are certainly grateful to have the 29-year old lefty in the rotation. Without him, they’d be in even worse shape.
