The New York Mets have had a busy offseason. They signed Juan Soto, Sean Manaea, Frankie Montas and Clay Holmes. That has likely made it difficult for them to reach a deal with Pete Alonso.
The San Francisco Giants payroll is $51 million less right now than it was on Opening Day in 2024. They have tried Corbin Burnes but failed. Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller suggested they could pivot to sign Alonso away from the Mets.
“The prevailing assumption for a few weeks was that the G-Men would be the ones to land Corbin Burnes, but he ended up signing with Arizona instead,” wrote Miller. “Maybe San Francisco will win the Roki Sasaki sweepstakes in 2-3 weeks’ time, but that’s not an expensive move in the slightest. Maybe sign Jack Flaherty before that decision comes? Or pivot to Pete Alonso?”
Alonso is better than both of the Giants’ current options at first base. LaMonte Wade Jr. and Wilmer Flores both have defensive flexibility and could both be moved around the field or traded. The Mets would hate to see Alonso go, but may not be able to compete with the Giants financially right now.
Alonso is a four-time All-Star with the Mets. The Giants could pair the Mets superstar with Willy Adames to create a similar dynamic that Alonso had with Francisco Lindor. Lindor and Adames are two of the best power-hitting shortstops in baseball. Alonso has hit more home runs than any first baseman since he made his debut in 2019.
With both money and a need, the Giants are a realistic landing spot for Alonso.
