The New York Mets could be in the market for a starting pitcher near the trade deadline. Many of their players have advocated for them to acquire Sandy Alcántara.
The Marlins seem like a team that will again be selling at the deadline. Last season, they traded Luis Arráez and Tanner Scott. While Alcántara seems like a candidate to be moved, the New York Post’s Jon Heyman revealed that the Marlins are not looking to trade him at this time.
“This Marlins regime consistently tells interested teams legit ace Sandy Alcantara is not available,” wrote Heyman. “But considering the rest of their roster, rival execs remain hopeful their minds change.”
Alcántara won the National League Cy Young Award in 2022 but followed it up with a subpar year in 2023. He missed all of 2024 and the Marlins may be waiting for him to rebuild his trade value. Many Mets players think trading for Alcántara would be a great move.
“It would be one of the best trades that we could have,” Soto told Mike Puma of the New York Post. “I know we have great pitching here, but adding a Cy Young winner like that would be huge.”

“It would almost be like adding Soto,” Lindor told Puma. “You add Soto, it’s going to help the team. You add Alcantara and it’s going to help the team.”
The Mets are currently without Frankie Montas and Sean Manaea. Manaea reportedly suffered a setback and will be shut down for another two weeks. Alcántara could step in as the team’s ace and potentially lead them through October. In 2022, he led the league in innings pitched and complete games. He is a true workhorse and is one of the best pitchers in baseball when he’s healthy. However, until the Marlins are ready to discuss moving him, he is simply a dream for the Mets.
