McDavid extension may be pushed to next summer

As Edmonton Oilers fans continue awaiting news on the future of their franchise player Connor McDavid, questions persist in regards to if/when a deal will be reached.

Insider Chris Johnston had previously reported that McDavid will enter the 25-26 season without an extension in place, which was not the update that Oilers nation was looking for.

If true, this begs the question of when contract talks between McDavid and the Oilers pick up. McDavid himself has repeatedly said he is in no rush to get a deal done and this latest update puts that in perspective.

What is the latest on McDavid?

Via insider Frank Seravalli, if McDavid indeed enters this season without an extension agreed upon he could see this matter going all the way to next summer making this a 2026 offseason matter.

As if the pressure was not already on in Edmonton land this season, this development has brought the heat. McDavid has stated his commitment to win in Edmonton, will that go beyond this season? Connor’s patience has been tested with repeated playoff letdowns, can the Oilers afford another one?

The onus is on the Oilers to perform this season for McDavid’s sake. But will this contract dilemma be a distraction in the room? The Oilers will hope this McDavid situation does not resemble the Mitch Marner drama in Toronto last year.

Edmonton will look to win its first Stanley Cup in the McDavid era this year, it may be their last shot depending on what transpires…
