Mavericks to aid Cooper Flagg with former first-round pick?

The Dallas Mavericks haven’t done a bad job in giving no. 1 overall draft pick Cooper Flagg a solid supporting cast.

Yes, Kyrie Irving will be out for probably half of the 2025-26 as he rehabs his torn ACL, but there is still Klay Thompson and Anthony Davis, though they may both be past their days of being “elite,” and many may consider the three injury-prone, it’s still good veteran experience that the team is building around Flagg, not to mention that they’re still reliable options on the floor.

But now there is talk of the Mavericks adding another supporting to the long-term future they plan to have with the Duke superstar, and it’s a star they are all too familiar with.

According to Jonah Kubicek of Athlon Sports, there have been talks of the team going after Atlanta Hawks point guard Trae Young, whom the Mavericks drafted with the fifth overall pick in the 2018 NBA draft, before trading with the Hawks and receiving Luka Doncic.

Young, a four-time All-Star, led the NBA in assists last season, with 11.6, and would be the perfect option to feed Flagg and the other stars the ball, with Young also being a prolific scorer himself.

The Hawks point guard is one season away from being eligible for an opt out, and should he opt in, the Mavericks will be able to offer him a maximum deal in the offseason of the 2028 season.

However, Young has also been linked to the San Antonio Spurs to back up Victor Wembenyama, so the two Texas hoops teams could be at a tug of war for Young if he decides to leave Atlanta.
