Mavericks’ summer star leaving NBA for contract in Europe

The Dallas Mavericks gave a platform to Maxwell Lewis during NBA Summer League, and he used it well, putting up 12 points per game.

But that wasn’t enough to stick with the Mavs or another NBA team.

Instead, Lewis is heading to Turkey to play for Tofas S.K., the team announced on social media.

The 23-year old Lewis played the most recent NBA regular season with the Brooklyn Nets, averaging 5.3 points across 21 games.

He then played with Cooper Flagg and company at Summer League in Vegas.

Lewis was the 40th overall pick out of Pepperdine in 2023 by the Nuggets.

He joined the Lakers and spent lots of time with their G League affiliate in South Bay. He was then traded on Dec. 29 in the Dorian Finney-Smith deal, which is why he closed out the campaign in Brooklyn.

Summer League features plenty of scouts from overseas, and apparently Lewis’ strong play caught the attention of the Turkish club.

Given Lewis’ age, he very well could make it back to the NBA someday. For now, he’ll be plying his craft across the Atlantic.
