Kyrie Irving made his thoughts known about the trade that sent him from the Brooklyn Nets to the Dallas Mavericks.
After the Mavericks’ thrilling 106-98 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder, a game in which Irving scored 25 points, he mentioned his anniversary of the trade coming up and poked fun at it.
“Best trade in the business baby,” Irving said. “Who won that trade? Who won that trade? I was bad goods.”
While Irving seems to be at peace now and may want to make Dallas his long-term home, the New Jersey native’s time close to home did not go according to plan. He was ineligible to play in home games for most of the 2022 season, only playing in 29 games that season.
The Nets, with Kevin Durant and James Harden also in the mix, were heavily favored to win a championship that season after facing many untimely injuries in the playoffs the season before.
Overall, Irving’s tenure in Brooklyn was disappointing for Nets fans, especially since he had a chance to author his story as a hometown hero who grew up a fan of the team and led the franchise to its first-ever NBA championship.
But now, the eight-time All-Star has developed a nice relationship with Luka Doncic and has embraced his role as the team’s vocal leader.
As long as Dallas can weather the storm with Doncic out, a healthy Mavs team will be a tough out in the playoffs no matter where they’re seeded.
