Mavericks reportedly interested in Celtics’ NBA champion as Kyrie Irving replacement

After reaching the NBA finals just a season ago, the Dallas Mavericks failed to make the playoffs this year — falling to the Memphis Grizzlies in the Play-In tournament.

Not all is bad for the Mavericks, though, and missing the playoffs might have been a blessing in disguise.

The Mavericks secured the number one overall pick in the 2025 NBA draft after having just a 1.8% chance of winning. This means they will likely end up with Cooper Flagg, who should immediately make an impact both offensively and defensively.

According to a report by Marc Stein, the Mavericks also have interest in a successful veteran guard, Jrue Holiday.

Among others, the Mavericks have shown interest in Lonzo Ball and Chris Paul.

Holiday still remains the best and winningest player from the bunch, and after all, General Manager Nico Harrison has made it clear that he is looking to win now.

The Mavericks would be looking to put together a package that could help Boston despite the contractual complications of Holiday’s three years, $104 million remaining on his contract.

Regardless, this trade could be as simple as trading Daniel Gafford and PJ Washington straight up for Jrue Holiday.

Because of the Boston Celtics’ troubles with the 2nd apron, they may want to reconstruct this trade to set themselves up to take in less money.

The Mavericks will have a gaping hole at the point guard position with Kyrie Irving out for most of the season with a torn ACL, and Holiday could be the perfect win-now piece to replace him.
