Following an injury-riddled 2024-25 campaign in which the Dallas Mavericks traded Luka Doncic and missed the postseason, the team is aiming to return to form and make a deep playoff run.
While the Mavericks retooled their roster, they have also extended key returning players. Daniel Gafford was the first to receive an extension in July, signing a three-year, $54.4 million deal.
On Thursday, Dallas announced it officially signed P.J. Washington to a new extension. According to Schuyler Dixon of The Associated Press, the extension is worth $89 million over four years.

Washington’s impact in Dallas
Washington began his career with the Charlotte Hornets after being selected with the 12th overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. He was eventually traded to Dallas in February 2024 and became a key contributor to the team’s 2024 NBA Finals run, where they fell to the Boston Celtics in five games.
Despite injuries and the Mavericks’ struggles, the Kentucky product had a solid season in 2024-25. He averaged 14.7 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.1 blocks across 32.2 minutes per game in 57 regular-season games.
With the arrival of Cooper Flagg, however, Washington is expected to see a reduced role in the 2025-26 campaign. Still, he’s locked in with the Mavericks through the 2029-30 season and cannot be traded this season after signing his extension.
Washington has been a mainstay in the starting lineup since arriving in Dallas, though he will likely provide a spark off the bench this season. Regardless of his role, the 27-year-old forward will look to make a continued impact as the Mavericks try to rebound from a lackluster 2024-25 season.
