Mavericks expected to re-sign veteran playmaking guard to fill in for Kyrie Irving next season

The Dallas Mavericks have had quite the season. For starters, they did the unexpected and traded Luka Doncic for Anthony Davis. Davis had an impressive debut, but he suffered a left adductor strain. He has not played since the injury, and ESPN’s Shams Charania has reported that the 10-time All-Star’s season could be over. The Mavericks also lost their star guard Kyrie Irving, who will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL.

With all that has happened, the Mavericks have some things to think about over the summer. Their general manager Nico Harrison believes the team is “built to win now and in the future.” However, recent injuries and the Mavericks’ trajectory since the trade raises some concerns. Dallas needs to make some moves, and they could start by retaining some familiar faces.

Fadeaway World’s Eddie Bitar created a list of the best point guards available this summer, with Irving coming in at No. 1 due to his player option. However, the list also featured another Mavs guard, veteran guard Spencer Dinwiddie, who was No. 13.

This season, Dinwiddie is averaging 10.1 points and 3.8 assists. This is his second stint with the Mavericks, as he signed a one-year, $3.3 million deal last summer. He was a member of the Mavericks from 2022 to 2023 before they traded him to Brooklyn, which was the deal that brought Irving to Dallas.

Dinwiddie is an unrestricted free agent, so he could go elsewhere, but the Mavericks may offer him another short-term deal. If he decides to stay, the Mavs would have a playmaker that can come off the bench and create shots, and start while Irving is out. There are teams that can use his services, but the Mavericks may be the best fit.

It will be interesting to see what Dallas does in the offseason, but keeping Dinwiddie is a good place to start.
