Matthew Schaefer vows to earn opening-night spot with Islanders

The New York Islanders hit the jackpot in early May, leapfrogging 9 teams to win the lottery and secure the first overall pick in the 2025 NHL draft.

It was a moment that could change the future on Long Island, allowing the organization to select defenseman Matthew Schaefer when nobody thought it was possible.

Schaefer is projected to be a number one on the Islanders’ blue line for years to come, but will that begin in 2025-26? The 17-year-old is certainly planning on it and is determined to force his way onto the opening night roster and stay there for good.

Adam Kimelman shared his comments in a recent article for NHL.com.

“You don’t just get stuff given to you, right? You’ve got to earn it,” Schaefer said Wednesday. “You’ve got to earn your spot. I mean, still have to earn my spot on the team, and that’s what I’m going into camp to do. Still a lot of hard work. It’s going to take time, but I’m ready, and I can’t wait to just get into camp. So once we get going, get underway, I’ll be super excited,” Schaefer said.

“Still lots of hard work. When training camp comes, I think I’ve got to really prove a point and show them what I’m capable of, still got to make the team. I want to be in that opening night roster. So, still lots of hard work,” Schaefer added.

The soon-to-be 18-year-old spent his junior career with the OHL’s Erie Otters, taking major steps in his second season to emerge as the consensus best prospect in the 2025 draft class.

Schaefer’s first two games could be special

If Matthew Schaefer does earn his way onto the New York Islanders to start the season, then he’ll get to face off against a couple of legends to start his NHL career.

The Islanders begin in Pittsburgh to face Sidney Crosby and the Penguins, and follow that up with a match-up against Alex Ovechkin and the Capitals. Schaefer was asked whether he’s aware of those potential debut matchups.

“I’ve definitely heard. A lot of people have been telling me about that. I got to look at it quickly. But I’ll focus day by day, one at a time,” Schaefer said.

Schaefer’s talent is undeniable, so if he can prove he’s physically and mentally ready to jump right into action with the pros, then there’s no reason to believe he won’t be an Islander from day one.
