The Miami Marlins have performed a little bit better than they were expected thus far in 2025. They are 8-10 to start the year and sit in third place in the National League East, 3 1/2 games back of the first place New York Mets.
However, it is still early in the season, and that more than likely will not change their approach at the trade deadline.
The expectation is that Miami will trade their ace in former Cy Young winner Sandy Alcantara. He’ll likely be the top starting pitcher available at the deadline this year.
Bleacher Report’s Tim Kelly lists Alcantara as one of the likeliest players to be traded before the deadline.
“A two-time All-Star, Alcantara is still only 29. He’s making $17.3 million this season, and will earn a matching amount in 2026. His contract also includes a very team-friendly $21 million club option for 2027, so assuming he proves he’s healthy this summer, he should be the most-coveted trade candidate available,” Kelly writes.

Alcantara won a Cy Young award in 2022 and pitched all of 2023 before undergoing Tommy John surgery. That surgery took him out for all 2024.
The two-time All-Star is 2-0 in his first three starts of the year, but owns a 4.70 ERA, though that could simply be a product of bouncing back from Tommy John surgery.
The Marlins likely will be sellers this year at the trade deadline as they try to bring in more young talent for the future. Alcantara will likely command a massive haul.
Unlike Corbin Burnes last year, Alcantara has at least two years of control left. The 29-year-old’s club option could also drive up his price.
It will be interesting to see how things play out at the deadline. In all likelihood, the right-hander will be traded away.
