Mariners-Red Sox blockbuster trade proposal sends 2-time All-Star to Seattle

The Seattle Mariners have fallen out of the American League West division race as of now but hold a two-and-a-half game lead over the Texas Rangers for the third AL Wild Card spot.

Seattle typically has a strong pitching staff with a mediocre offense, but the script has flipped this season thanks to Cal Raleigh’s historic first half.

Although the Mariners should seek rotation help, they should also look into upgrading at third base.

Currently, Ben Williamson mans the hot corner in Seattle but he doesn’t bring much to the table offensively.

Williamson, 24, has just one home run and 14 RBI while slashing .258/.298/.319 in 63 games this season.

Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report ranked potential landing spots and trade proposals for Boston Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman, with Seattle grabbing the No. 1 spot.

“The Mariners with Bregman alongside Cal Raleigh and Julio Rodríguez would be a scary team capable of making it to the World Series, which should be the whole idea after 48 years of swings and misses,” wrote Rymer.

In Rymer’s proposal, the Mariners would acquire Bregman in exchange for right-hander Luis Castillo and second baseman Michael Arroyo (Seattle No. 6).

Castillo has a no-trade clause, but there were trade talks between the two teams in the offseason, per Jared Carrabis.

Bregman, 31, signed a three-year, $120 million contract with opt-outs after the first two seasons with the Red Sox in February. The two-time All-Star and World Series champion has 11 home runs and 35 RBI while slashing .299/.385/.553 in 51 games this season.

Bregman has been sidelined with a quad injury since May 23 but seems to be trending toward a return very soon.
